What to Do When a Client Requests a Domain Name Change

A client may occasionally wish to change their domain name. There are a few steps you should take in order to make sure the process goes smoothly.

There are some (minimal) steps the client will need to take on their end to ensure the domain is changed. There are also changes on our end that need to be taken place to ensure the domain name change is completed.

Before You Change the Domain Name

Changes On Our End

Update site Settings in MCP

We need to adjust the client's domain name in MCP. To do this:

  1. Go to the MCP Site Settings
  2. Search the Client's current domain name and open their MCP Settings
  3. Adjust the Site Domain, Email From Name and Site Name to the new requested domain name

When entering the Site Domain, be sure to include the "www" prefix. However, you do not need to include this prefix for the Site Name.

After concluding your changes, return to the MCP results page to select the website, and perform a SYNCDNS SSL Action. This will apply the domain name changes and add an SSL Certificate the client's website.

Update CRM Settings

Next, visit the CRM company's page to search for your client's website

After opening their CRM in the Superuser admin view, we need to adjust the Name and Outgoing Email notification to reflect the new domain name.

Please Note

Do not change anything other than the initial email name in the outgoing email address (example: michaelsells@real-estate- quickandsimplehomes@real-estate-request.com

On the Client's End

If the Client's website is not live

Double-check for approval status. You can skip down to "Changing Site Settings" and after you change their domain name, let the client know they will see the change when they push their site live.

If the Client's website is live

If the client has already launched their website with Real Geeks, then it's important to ask if they are planning to use their current domain name for another website.

If the client will not be using their old domain name:

Remove the Real Geeks Nameservers from the client's domain registrar

Perform a 301 Redirect from their current domain to the new one the customer wants to use for their Real Geeks website. This will ensure no loss in their lead traffic, and ensures their leads in the CRM can get back to their website

If the client will be using their old domain name:

Remove the Real Geeks Nameservers from the client's domain registrar
