What is a Dataset?
A dataset is a unique string of 15 digits that tracks information captured from an advertisement posted through Facebook. The dataset has a preloaded event called "PageView" that tracks whenever a user views any page on the customer's website that contains the dataset. This data is then compiled and used for analytics, budgeting, ad spend, targeting & more.
For those familiar with pixels, it's the exact same thing, just with an event already packaged with it. You will still see the phrase "pixel" used in Facebook, but all our setup will be done through Datasets.
How to create a Dataset
The following process must take place on a Zoom screenshare. The Real Geeks representative will need to assume direct control of the customer's screen. Please ensure the customer is on a desktop or laptop with good internet connection.
Step 1: Accessing Facebook Business Settings
After taking control of the computer, navigate to Facebook.com and access their business page. From there, you will have the following:
Congratulations, you're in Business Settings!
Step 2: Creating a Dataset
Now that you are in the business settings, you can access the Datasets.
You will then create a new dataset with the Add button. What you decide to name the dataset is irrelevant, but remember that the customer will always have it in their business settings as these cannot be deleted. You will then add ALL available assets & people to the dataset. Only then do you click Open in Events Manager and move to the next step.
Step 3: Adding the pixel to MCP
Still with me? Great, because here's where it starts getting tricky! Remember pixels? They're still a part of the process, and we put it in the same spot.
You will now be on a fresh dataset. At this time, this dataset exists only in Facebook. We must now bring it over into their Real Geeks site. You will do this by setting up & emailing the pixel code to yourself.
Following the steps below, generate the meta pixel and email it to support@realgeeks.com to create a ticket. You will then merge that pixel ticket into the ticket you're working to keep it all together.
The pixel instruction ticket will have the sending email "noreply@facebook.com" and look like this in Zendesk:
Now that you have the pixel, it's time to save it into MCP Common Settings.
Step 4: Activating the dataset
Now that the dataset is created, the assets are attached and the pixel is saved to the website, we can now activate the dataset by testing the event.
Remember that datasets have a preloaded event, "PageView", but we still need to activate it by testing the event. Select your Dataset and follow the steps below.
Click around on the website a few times to activate the PageView event. Afterwards, you will get the following:
After confirming a successful test event, return to the Data Sources page and confirm that the event and website are now detected.
Facebook may take up to 15 minutes to update. Refresh every few minutes to see if the website & event is detected.
